The Lead Engineer is the technical professional who provides engineering direction based on a high level of expertise. The Lead Engineer manages the team of engineers directly in-field and oversees their work. The Lead Engineer is expected to mentor and guide the individual engineers within their specialty; ensuring technical issues within their area are addressed, either by them or by someone on the team. This position interfaces with the Plant Manager, Contract Operations Manager, Client Representatives, etc. They plan, organize, and direct the engineering work, ensuring on-time completion and quality outcomes. The Lead Engineer must also ensure that engineering processes are followed, and product quality is maintained. They also stand in for the Plant Manager during the Plant Managers absence.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical direction and leadership in-field of a team of engineers.
  • Mentor, guide, and develop junior engineering staff.
  • Identify solutions to quickly repair or mitigate equipment failure within 24 hours of failure.
  • Ensure that all engineering procedures and guidelines are followed and carried out to the fullest and highest standards.
  • Review and verify that all preventive maintenance conducted on all equipment has been carried out to meet DIDLAKE standards.
  • Perform operation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of all mechanical air conditioning and heating systems, air handling units, pumps, heat exchangers, medical refrigeration units, hot/cold water lines, expansion joints, plumbing, and electric motors.
  • Rebuild pumps, install mechanical seals, and pump alignment using proper tools as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot and make necessary repairs to refrigeration systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electric, electronic, and pneumatic control systems.
  • Possess adequate sight, hearing, and speaking capabilities to maintain a safe working condition and be able to distinguish wire colors and component color codes.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance duties as scheduled including but be limited to filter changes, lubrication, control, and performance checks using facility BAS and work order system.
  • Evacuate refrigeration systems, perform refrigeration leak tests, recover refrigerant, and replace refrigerant compressors following the most recent state and federal regulatory requirements for service and repair practices of refrigeration systems and components.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs on centrifugal, screws, reciprocal, and open drive chiller systems and refrigeration systems to include various sizes of rooftop package units, split systems, air handlers, computer room systems, low-pressure steam systems, hot water, and chilled water systems, process chilled water systems, pneumatic, mechanical and electronic systems.
  • Maintain a safe and accident-free workplace and exercise common sense and good judgment when performing duties.
  • Perform snow removal of the exterior/grounds, sidewalks, etc., when necessary.
  • Respond to emergency situations to mitigate related issues e.g., flooding, snow removal, etc.
  • Attend safety meetings and participate in the emergency response team.
  • Comply with and enforce policy and procedures manual and safety guidelines.
  • Understand the difference between a policy and a procedure.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an engineering capacity with at least 2 of those years in a leadership role.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to obtain a MD Grade 3 (or higher) Stationary Engineer License
  • Possess an OSHA 10 Certification
  • Possess CFC Certification
  • Ability to interact effectively and supportively with people with disabilities.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and practices.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • Ability to support and work with people with disabilities.
  • Extremely strong technical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with the operation of building automation systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, pneumatic mechanical, and/or electric control drawings.
  • Must be willing to work overtime when needed and be willing to take on-call assignments.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and execute written and oral instructions and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders.
  • Exercises good judgment and uses discretion.
  • Ability to keep processes moving forward and take initiative as appropriate.
  • Should be self-directed and motivated, demonstrate quick turnaround, follow through, and follow up.
  • Must be reliable, dependable with excellent attendance, flexible and versatile.
  • Must possess positive interpersonal skills and be able to communicate well and in a positive manner to customers, employees, visitors, and vendors at all times.
  • The ability to work well under pressure.
